Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Vigil

Reading 1 : 1 Chronicles 15:3-4, 15-16; 16:1-2

David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring the ark of the Lord
to the place which he had prepared for it.
David also called together the sons of Aaron and the Levites.

The Levites bore the ark of God on their shoulders with poles,
as Moses had ordained according to the word of the Lord.

David commanded the chiefs of the Levites
to appoint their kinsmen as chanters,
to play on musical instruments, harps, lyres, and cymbals,
to make a loud sound of rejoicing.

They brought in the ark of God and set it within the tent
which David had pitched for it.
Then they offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings to God.
When David had finished offering up the burnt offerings and peace offerings,
he blessed the people in the name of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 132:6-7, 9-10, 13-14

R. (8) Lord, go up to the place of your rest, you and the ark of your holiness.
Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah;
we found it in the fields of Jaar.
Let us enter his dwelling,
let us worship at his footstool.

Reading II : 1 Corinthians 15:54b-57

Brothers and sisters:
When that which is mortal clothes itself with immortality,
then the word that is written shall come about:

    Death is swallowed up in victory.
    Where, O death, is your victory?
    Where, O death, is your sting?

The sting of death is sin,
and the power of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God who gives us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Blessed are they who hear the word of God
and observe it.

Gospel : Luke 11:27-28

While Jesus was speaking,
a woman from the crowd called out and said to him,
“Blessed is the womb that carried you
and the breasts at which you nursed.”
He replied,
“Rather, blessed are those
who hear the word of God and observe it.”

Message from the Readings

Today’s Vigil readings proclaim a radiant truth:
Mary is the new Ark of God’s presence—chosen, blessed, and lifted into glory because she received and lived God’s Word with perfect faith.
• The Ark brought God’s presence into Israel; Mary carried God Himself in her womb.
• God chooses to dwell among His people with joy and blessing.
• Christ’s victory over death prepares the way for Mary’s Assumption.
• Jesus reveals that true blessedness comes from hearing and keeping God’s Word—something Mary did perfectly.
The message is clear: Mary’s Assumption is a sign of hope for every believer: where she has gone, we are called to follow.

 Reflection for the Day

The Vigil readings invite us to see Mary through the lens of salvation history.
In 1 Chronicles, the Ark of the Covenant is carried into Jerusalem with singing, instruments, and overwhelming joy. The Ark was sacred because it held the presence of God.
In Mary, the presence of God is not carried in stone— but in her very body.
She becomes the living Ark, the dwelling place of the Word made flesh, the vessel of God’s glory.
Psalm 132 deepens this image: God chooses a dwelling place for Himself— a place of rest, blessing, and holiness.
Mary is that chosen dwelling. And through her, God comes near to us.
Then Paul proclaims the victory of Christ: death has been defeated, the grave has lost its power, and eternal life has been opened.
Mary’s Assumption is the first flowering of this victory. She shares fully in the triumph of her Son.
Finally, Jesus gives the key to understanding Mary’s greatness: “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.”
Mary is blessed not only because she bore Jesus, but because she listened, obeyed, surrendered, and lived God’s Word with perfect fidelity.
Her Assumption is not just about her—it is about us. It is a promise: Those who cling to Christ will share His victory. Those who keep God’s Word will be lifted into glory.
Today’s readings invite us to three movements:

1. Welcome God’s presence like Mary.
   Let your heart become a dwelling place for His Word.
2. Live with hope in Christ’s victory.
   Death does not have the final word—Jesus does.
3. Imitate Mary’s obedience.
   Blessedness comes from hearing and keeping God’s Word.
   Let today be a day of joy, hope, and renewed devotion to Christ and His Mother.

Prayer for Today

Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of Your Mother, the new Ark of Your presence and the first to share fully in Your victory.
Teach me to hear Your Word and keep it with a faithful heart.
Fill me with hope in Your triumph over death and help me walk the path that leads to glory.
Mary, Mother of God, pray for me, guide me, and lead me closer to Your Son.
