Tuesday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1  : Micah 7:14-15, 18-20

Shepherd your people with your staff,
the flock of your inheritance,
That dwells apart in a woodland,
in the midst of Carmel.
Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead,
as in the days of old;
As in the days when you came from the land of Egypt,
show us wonderful signs.Who is there like you, the God who removes guilt
and pardons sin for the remnant of his inheritance;
Who does not persist in anger forever,
but delights rather in clemency,
And will again have compassion on us,
treading underfoot our guilt?
You will cast into the depths of the sea
all our sins;
You will show faithfulness to Jacob,
and grace to Abraham,
As you have sworn to our fathers
from days of old.

Gospel  : Matthew 12:46-50

While Jesus was speaking to the crowds,
his mother and his brothers appeared outside,
wishing to speak with him.
Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside,
asking to speak with you.”
But he said in reply to the one who told him,
“Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?”
And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said,
“Here are my mother and my brothers.
For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father
is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

Message from the Readings

Today’s readings proclaim a deeply comforting truth:

God’s mercy gathers us, restores us, and makes us part of His family.

• Micah reveals God as a Shepherd who forgives and delights in compassion.
• The psalm reminds us that God restores what is broken.
• Jesus teaches that doing the Father’s will draws us into His family.

The message is clear: We belong to God not by birth, but by obedience and trust.

Reflection for the Day

Micah’s prayer is tender and hopeful. He asks God to shepherd His people as He once did—guiding them, feeding them, and showing them wonders. But the most striking part is God’s character:
“Who is there like You, the God who removes guilt… who delights in clemency?”
God does not forgive reluctantly. He delights in mercy. He enjoys restoring His people. He casts sins into the depths of the sea—not to be retrieved, remembered, or used against us.
The psalm echoes this longing for restoration: “Lord, show us Your mercy and love.” It is a prayer of people who know they have failed, yet trust that God’s kindness is greater than their mistakes.
Then Jesus reveals something astonishing in the Gospel. When told His mother and brothers are outside, He stretches out His hand toward His disciples and says:
“Here are my mother and my brothers.” “Whoever does the will of my Father is family.”
Jesus is not rejecting His earthly family—He is expanding the definition of family to include you and me. Obedience becomes the doorway into belonging. Doing God’s will becomes the bond that unites us with Christ Himself.
Today’s readings invite us to three movements:

1. Trust in God’s mercy.
   He delights in forgiving you—approach Him with confidence.
2. Seek restoration.
   Let God heal what is broken in your life and relationships.
3. Live as God’s family.
   Choose His will daily, and you will find yourself closer to Christ than ever before.
   Let today be a day of mercy, belonging, and renewed trust in God’s faithful love.

Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, shepherd my heart with Your mercy and restore what is wounded within me.
Cast my sins into the depths of the sea and fill me with Your compassion.
Teach me to do Your will so that I may live as a true member of Your family.
Draw me close to Jesus today and help me walk in Your love with humility and trust.
