Daily Bible readings for October 16,2026
Friday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time
Reading 1 : Ephesians 1:11-14
Brothers and sisters:
In Christ we were also chosen,
destined in accord with the purpose of the One
who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will,
so that we might exist for the praise of his glory,
we who first hoped in Christ.
In him you also, who have heard the word of truth,
the Gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him,
were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
which is the first installment of our inheritance
toward redemption as God’s possession, to the praise of his glory.
Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 33:1-2, 4-5, 12-13
R. (12) Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.
Exult, you just, in the LORD;
praise from the upright is fitting.
Give thanks to the LORD on the harp;
with the ten-stringed lyre chant his praises.
R. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.
For upright is the word of the LORD,
and all his works are trustworthy.
He loves justice and right;
of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full.
R. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.
Blessed the nation whose God is the LORD,
the people he has chosen for his own inheritance.
From heaven the LORD looks down;
he sees all mankind.
R. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.
Alleluia : Psalm 33:22
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
May your kindness, LORD, be upon us;
who have put our hope in you.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel : Luke 12:1-7
At that time:
So many people were crowding together
that they were trampling one another underfoot.
Jesus began to speak, first to his disciples,
“Beware of the leaven–that is, the hypocrisy–of the Pharisees.
“There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed,
nor secret that will not be known.
Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness
will be heard in the light,
and what you have whispered behind closed doors
will be proclaimed on the housetops.
I tell you, my friends,
do not be afraid of those who kill the body
but after that can do no more.
I shall show you whom to fear.
Be afraid of the one who after killing
has the power to cast into Gehenna;
yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one.
Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins?
Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.
Even the hairs of your head have all been counted.
Do not be afraid.
You are worth more than many sparrows.”
Message from the Readings
Today’s readings proclaim a deeply reassuring truth:
God has chosen us, sealed us with His Spirit, and knows us intimately — therefore we must live with integrity, courage, and trust.
• Paul reminds us that our inheritance in Christ is secure.
• The psalm celebrates God’s faithful love and His care for His people.
• Jesus warns against hypocrisy and invites us to live transparently before God, who knows every detail of our lives.
The message is clear: We belong to God — so let our lives reflect truth, sincerity, and trust in His care.
Reflection for the Day
Paul’s words in Ephesians are overflowing with identity and assurance:
“In Christ we were chosen… sealed with the Holy Spirit.”
This means your life is not random. Your story is not accidental. Your future is not uncertain.
You carry a divine seal — the Holy Spirit marking you as God’s own.
This seal is not symbolic. It is the guarantee of God’s promise, the assurance that His plan for you is real, active, and unfolding.
Psalm 33 continues this theme:
• God’s word is trustworthy.
• His works are faithful.
• His love fills the earth.
• Blessed are the people He has chosen.
You are part of that blessing. You are chosen, loved, and held.
Then Jesus speaks directly to the heart:
“Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees — hypocrisy.”
Hypocrisy is not simply pretending. It is living divided — one face for people, another face for God.
Jesus reminds us:
• Nothing hidden will stay hidden.
• God sees the truth of our hearts.
• And yet — we are precious to Him.
“Even the hairs of your head are counted.”
This is not a threat. It is comfort.
God sees everything — and still loves you completely.
He knows your fears, your wounds, your struggles, your hopes. He knows the parts of you that no one else sees. And He calls you to live honestly, courageously, and freely.
Today’s readings invite us to three movements:
- Live as someone chosen and sealed by God.
Your identity is secure in Christ. - Trust God’s faithful love.
His word is true. His care is constant. - Reject hypocrisy and embrace authenticity.
Let your inner life match your outer life.
Let today be a day of truth, courage, and deep trust in God’s loving gaze.
Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me, redeeming me, and sealing me with Your Holy Spirit.
Teach me to live with integrity, to reject hypocrisy, and to walk in the freedom of Your truth.
Help me trust Your faithful love and remember that I am precious in Your sight.
May my life today reflect Your glory, Your goodness, and Your grace.
Amen.
