Have you ever tried so hard to be better – Ever tried to rebuild your life by fixing your habits, by strengthening your faith – Only to feel like you are running a race on a treadmill ? No matter how deeply you pray or how hard you are pushing ,something inside still feels hollow, unsteady , unfinished.
What If I say the problem isn’t in your effort? What if you are not failing at all ? What if you are simply exhausted from fighting the wrong battle?
Everything begins to shift the moment you understand one word:
Abide
In the Bible John 15, Jesus gives us a message which flips our entire understanding of the spiritual growth. Majority of us treat the spiritual life like a battery , which we have to keep recharging. However , Jesus tell us something radically different – Something which doesn’t drain us , Instead help us to sustain.
By the time you finish reading this article , You will understand which peace doesn’t come from trying harder and why your breakthrough may be waiting on something far simpler than you think.
The Striver Vs The Abider
Imagine 2 people chasing the same thing: a grounded , meaningful and peaceful life.
The Striver:
The Striver wakes up every day and says “Today I will be better “. They read the books, They check the boxes, They push themselves through sheer will power.
But Deepdown , behind their eyes Is exhaustion. They are terrified that if they stop pushing -Even for a moment everything will fall apart. The faith for them feels like endless to-do list.
The Abider:
The Abiders life isn’t perfect either. They too face storms, but they move with a quiet steadiness.
They’re not frantic nor burned out . They are not trying to generate power, but are simply connected to it.
The difference is not that they try less but that they are more grounded.
The Upper Room: When Jesus Gave the Master Key
The upper room is where Jesus gave the master key . This was not said in the calm afternoon. It was said just before Jesus would be taken away.
If you had only minutes left with the people you love , you wouldn’t waste them on small talk. You’d give them the one thing they absolutely need.
Jesus did not give His disciples a list of things to do. He did not tell them to work hard for the Kingdom. He did not tell them to try.
He gave the disciples one thing to do: Jesus gave them one urgent command, the master key that Jesus gave is
“Abide in me “.
Later he told them a simple parable which a small child could understand it:
“I am the vine ; you are the branches.”
Let’s break down what does “the secret of Vine” mean.
The Vine – is the source of life , strength of nourishment.
The Branch – is you
The Fruit – Peace , Joy , character , growth
Here is the truth which changes everything:
We all know that a branch never works to produce the fruit. Its doesn’t strain nor stess. It doesn’t wonder if it’s doing enough.
The branch has just one job which is to stay attached , if connection of the branch is strong the fruit is inevitable.
If you’re struggling to be peaceful, joyful or grounded, it’s not because you’re weak – it’s because you’re trying to be the vine instead of the branch.
Abiding isn’t a visit – it’s a dwelling . In Greek the word abide means Remain, stay , dwell.
Let’s look at another scenario. A scenario of difference between a tourist and resident.
A tourist checks in occasionally. but a resident lives there.
Many of us treat God like a tourist destination- Something we visit Sundays or during crisis.
Abiding means not just a visit, you don’t leave him when the prayer end , its not just a transaction which you do to get things. It’s not a dwelling that you bring him into your commute, your conversations , your rest the pressure is off.
You don’t have to reach him. You just have to stop leaving him.
Running on a 12 % battery
Think about your phone which is low on battery, when you unplug it, it doesn’t die immediately. It still works. It still looks fine . But the count have already begun.
That’s how most of live spiritually isn’t it ?
We are not bad, we also haven’t rejected God. But we have just unplugged.
We are busy in trying to handle today’s stress, tomorrow’s worries, and next week’s responsibilities on yesterday’s charge.
When this happens our soul starts sending the warning lights. We are drained before the day begins, feel anxious like everything depends on you. Feel empty , whatever you achieved feels no longer meaningful. You are always striving to work harder but gain very less from it.
Your soul always whispers to you saying “I wasn’t built to do this alone.”
Trying harder isn’t the answer, When something feels off – our temper , our anxiety our purpose – we tend to immediately switch to fixing mode like praying harder , reading more by pushing harder , but Jesus never told to try harder.
He said: ” Apart from me , you can do nothing”;
Trying to Grow without abiding is like polishing a lamp and expecting it to glow . You polish a lamp all you want- but without connection there is no light.
Growth isn’t reward for effort It’s a byproduct of surrender.
Here are 3 internal switches that help you abide daily. You don’t need a monastery retreat. You just need to flip 3 internal switches your day.
The Narrative switch : Let God’s word shape your reactions
Most of us spend our day reacting to stressful email, rude comments , bad news , unexpected problems ,. When we react, we operate from our limited battery.
The flip : Before you react ,pause let one truth from scripture shape your perspective.
The Mantra: I am not what my stress says I am. I am who God says I am.
The Presence Switch — Move From Scheduled Prayer to Constant Connection
Many people think prayer is a meeting they have to schedule. But you don’t visit the vine—you stay attached to it.
The Flip: Talk to God like He’s in the room with you—while doing dishes, driving, working, or resting.
The Practice: Short breath prayers. Just a few words to acknowledge He is right there.
The Alignment Switch — See Obedience as Protection, Not Restriction
Obedience isn’t about earning points or keeping God happy. It’s about staying in the flow of power.
Every time you choose God’s way over your impulse, you’re not performing—you’re clearing the line.
The Flip: Obedience protects your connection.
The Result: When your life aligns with His, the power of the vine flows into the branch without resistance.
What Happens When You Stop Striving and Start Abiding
When you finally stop trying and start abiding, the atmosphere of your life begins to shift. Not through magic, but through natural transformation.
A healthy tree doesn’t have to be told to grow apples. It just grows because it’s healthy.
When you’re connected to the source:
Peace stops being a goal and becomes a reality
Joy stops being a chase and becomes a steady undercurrent
Strength stops being a strain and becomes a supply
Your life begins to produce fruit—patience, kindness, purpose—naturally. You’re no longer a factory worker trying to meet a quota. You’re a branch, and the life of God is flowing through you.
The Truth You Can Rest In Today
The Christian life is not a test to see how much you can handle. It is a living connection to the One who handles everything.
It’s not about striving. It’s about abiding.
It’s not about your power. It’s about His source.
It’s not about doing more. It’s about staying near.
If you’re tired of being tired, stop trying to fix the branch. Just return to the vine.
The moment you stop trying to do it all yourself is the moment everything begins to change.
When You Feel Overwhelmed — Do One Thing
The next time you feel that familiar heaviness—drained, empty, overwhelmed—don’t try harder. Don’t go back to the battery life. Don’t return to the hamster wheel of striving.
Reconnect. Breathe. Pause. Reach out.
Everything you’ve been exhausting yourself to find—peace that lasts, strength that doesn’t quit, joy that isn’t fake—flows from one quiet place.
It doesn’t come from your hustle. It comes from your home.
Stop trying. Start abiding.
A Simple Step You Can Take Right Now
If these words touched a dry place in your soul, don’t just scroll away. Make a move toward the vine right now.
Go to the comments and type:
“Lord, teach me to abide.”
By typing those words, you’re telling your heart that the striving is over and the connection has begun.
And if you know someone running on 1% battery—someone exhausted, anxious, or worn out—share this with them. Give them permission to stop pushing and start resting.
Let’s stop the hustle together. Let’s learn to stay connected.
