Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading 1: Isaiah 22:19-23

Thus says the LORD to Shebna, master of the palace:
“I will thrust you from your office
and pull you down from your station.
On that day I will summon my servant
Eliakim, son of Hilkiah;
I will clothe him with your robe,
and gird him with your sash,
and give over to him your authority.
He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
and to the house of Judah.
I will place the key of the House of David on Eliakim’s shoulder;
when he opens, no one shall shut,
when he shuts, no one shall open.
I will fix him like a peg in a sure spot,
to be a place of honor for his family.”

Reading 2 : Romans 11:33-36

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!
How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways!
For who has known the mind of the Lord

that he may be repaid?
For from him and through him and for him are all things.
To him be glory forever. Amen.

Gospel : Matthew 16:13-20

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and
he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Simon Peter said in reply,
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus said to him in reply,
“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah.
For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
And so I say to you, you are Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;
and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Then he strictly ordered his disciples
to tell no one that he was the Christ.

 Message from the Readings

Today’s readings proclaim a decisive truth:
Faith requires a choice—daily, intentional, and sometimes costly. But choosing Christ leads to life.
• Joshua urges Israel to choose the Lord over all other gods.
• The psalm reminds us that God rescues those who cling to Him.
• Paul calls believers to live relationships rooted in Christ’s love.
• Jesus invites His disciples to trust Him even when His words are hard to understand.
The message is clear: Faith is not passive. It is a commitment that shapes every part of life.

 Reflection for the Day

Joshua stands before the people and asks a question that echoes across centuries:
“Whom will you serve?”
It is not a theoretical question. It is a life‑defining one.
Israel remembers God’s faithfulness—His deliverance, His protection, His miracles—and they respond:
“We will serve the Lord.”
Faith begins with a choice.
The psalm shows what happens when we make that choice: God hears. God rescues. God stays close to the brokenhearted. He becomes a refuge in every storm.
Then Paul reminds us that faith is not only about belief—it transforms relationships. Christ’s love becomes the model for how we treat one another: with sacrifice, tenderness, patience, and honor.
Finally, the Gospel brings us to a moment of crisis.
Jesus’ teaching on the Bread of Life is difficult. Many disciples walk away. They choose comfort over commitment, clarity over trust.
But Peter stays. Not because he understands everything, but because he knows who Jesus is.
His words are the heartbeat of every believer:
“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
Faith is not always easy. But it is always worth choosing.
Today’s readings invite us to three movements:

1. Choose whom you will serve.
   Make your faith intentional, not accidental.
2. Trust God in the hard teachings.
   Faith grows most when understanding is limited.
3. Let Christ’s love shape your relationships.
   Serve, forgive, and love as He loves.
   Let today be a day of renewed commitment, deeper trust, and courageous faith.

 Prayer for Today

Lord Jesus, I choose You today. Strengthen my faith when Your words challenge me and deepen my trust when the path feels unclear.
Be my refuge, my strength, and my joy. Teach me to love others with the same sacrificial love You show to me.
Like Peter, may my heart say each day: “You have the words of eternal life.”
