Tuesday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1 : Galatians 5:1-6

Brothers and sisters:
For freedom Christ set us free;
so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.

It is I, Paul, who am telling you
that if you have yourselves circumcised,
Christ will be of no benefit to you.
Once again I declare to every man who has himself circumcised
that he is bound to observe the entire law.
You are separated from Christ,
you who are trying to be justified by law;
you have fallen from grace.
For through the Spirit, by faith, we await the hope of righteousness.
For in Christ Jesus,
neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything,
but only faith working through love.

Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 119:41, 43, 44, 45, 47, 48

R. (41a) Let your mercy come to me, O Lord.
Let your mercy come to me, O LORD,
your salvation according to your promise.
R. Let your mercy come to me, O Lord.
Take not the word of truth from my mouth,
for in your ordinances is my hope.
R. Let your mercy come to me, O Lord.
And I will keep your law continually,
forever and ever.
R. Let your mercy come to me, O Lord.
And I will walk at liberty,
because I seek your precepts.
R. Let your mercy come to me, O Lord.
And I will delight in your commands,
which I love.
R. Let your mercy come to me, O Lord.
And I will lift up my hands to your commands
and meditate on your statutes.
R. Let your mercy come to me, O Lord.

Alleluia : Hebrews 4:12

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
The word of God is living and effective,
able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel : Luke 11:37-41

After Jesus had spoken,
a Pharisee invited him to dine at his home.
He entered and reclined at table to eat.
The Pharisee was amazed to see
that he did not observe the prescribed washing before the meal.
The Lord said to him, “Oh you Pharisees!
Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish,
inside you are filled with plunder and evil.
You fools!
Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside?
But as to what is within, give alms,
and behold, everything will be clean for you.”

Message from the Readings

Today’s readings proclaim a liberating and challenging truth:
Christ frees us — not through rituals or appearances, but through faith expressed in love and a heart transformed from within.
• Paul warns against returning to spiritual slavery.
• The psalmist delights in God’s truth and walks in freedom.
• Jesus exposes the danger of external religion without inner conversion.
The message is clear: Real holiness begins in the heart — and flows outward through love, mercy, and generosity.

 Reflection for the Day

Paul’s words are sharp and freeing:
“For freedom Christ set us free.”
Freedom is not doing whatever we want — it is living in the grace Christ offers, unburdened by fear, guilt, or empty religious performance.
Paul warns the Galatians not to rely on external rituals for salvation. Circumcision, in this context, symbolizes trying to earn God’s love through human effort.
But Paul says:
“Only faith working through love counts.”
Faith is not passive. It is active, living, and expressed through love.
Psalm 119 echoes this interior freedom:
• “Let Your mercy come to me.”
• “I will walk at liberty.”
• “I delight in Your commands.”
True obedience is joyful, not burdensome. It flows from a heart touched by God’s mercy.
Then Jesus confronts the Pharisees at dinner.
They are shocked that He did not perform the ritual washing. But Jesus sees deeper:
“You cleanse the outside… but inside you are filled with plunder and evil.”
External religion without internal transformation is empty.
Jesus does not condemn rituals — He condemns hypocrisy.
He offers a simple path to true purity:
“Give alms… and everything will be clean for you.”
Generosity purifies the heart. Mercy cleanses the soul. Love transforms the interior.
Today’s readings invite us to three movements:

  1. Stand firm in Christ’s freedom.
Do not return to fear‑based or performance‑based religion.
  2. Let God’s Word shape your heart.
It is living, effective, and reveals what needs healing.
  3. Practice interior conversion.
Let love, mercy, and generosity be the signs of your faith.
Let today be a day of freedom, authenticity, and inner renewal.

Prayer for Today

Lord Jesus, thank You for setting me free from fear, guilt, and empty rituals.
Purify my heart and teach me to live a faith that expresses itself through love.
Let Your Word search me, heal me, and transform me from within.
Help me walk in Your freedom, delight in Your truth, and show generosity that reflects Your heart.
Make me clean — inside and out.
Amen.
